History
Hattie and John Luhm got the idea for opening a thrift store in Shelton when they were furnishing their cabin in Arizona by going to the St. Vincent DePaul Thrift Store to buy things. They thought it would be a great way for the Senior Center to raise money to keep the Mason County Senior Center going as it is self-supporting. They brought the idea back and with others at the Senior Center set about establishing the first Nifty Thrifty Store in the spring of 1985.

The original Nifty Thrifty Store was in the same building where it is today, only it was quite a bit smaller. Lou Redman, president of the organization, and with the help of Marge Emsley-Brown, then Managing Director of the Senior Center, Hattie Luhm, then a member of the board of directors, and her husband John, with the help of other Volunteers, scrubbed, cleaned, painted and built shelves, working many hours getting the store ready to open. Hattie recruited Doris Olson to be the first store Manager. Doris was succeeded by Pat Dover.

Volunteers were recruited to serve as cashiers, to clean, sort and price donations, stock shelves, and bag purchases. Hattie Luhm was the first Volunteer cashier, recruiter and scheduler. She did this for many years. Many Volunteers help out at the Nifty Thrifty Store working two or more hours each week to keep things moving smoothly. Their time and efforts are greatly appreciated. It is a great way for you to give back to the community.

Volunteers are warmly welcomed!
